It is part of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project and was constructed in 1976. The dam is situated on the Cheruthoni River, a tributary of the Periyar River, and has a height of 138 meters and a length of 650 meters.
The dam's reservoir, known as the Idukki Reservoir, has a storage capacity of 2,403,000,000 cubic meters and is one of the largest arch dams in Asia. The reservoir provides water for irrigation, drinking, and power generation for the state of Kerala. The Idukki Hydroelectric Power Station, located downstream of the Cheruthoni Dam, has an installed capacity of 780 megawatts and is one of the largest hydroelectric power stations in India.
The Cheruthoni Dam and the Idukki Hydroelectric Project are major tourist attractions in Kerala, with thousands of visitors coming to see the scenic beauty and engineering marvel of the dam and its surrounding areas.
